Twitter Denies Takeover Talks

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Word that Apple might be considering a $700 million takeover of Twitter was dismissed as just a rumor by one of the founders of the micro-blogging site.

Biz Stone said in a television appearance Wednesday on The View that his company was not for sale. The company recently rejected a $500 million from rival Facebook.

“It’s not totally out of the question, but it doesn’t fit with Apple’s pattern,” said KCBS technology analyst Larry Magid, who believes Apple’s culture of control would not easily gel with the free form conversation the Twitter platform serves up 140 characters at a time.

The Tweeted version: “Silly rumor floating around, doubt it’s true,” Magid said.

The audience for the free service has seen explosive growth in 2009. Figures from Nielson Online showed the Twitter website drawing 7 million unique visitors this February, up from 475,000 in February of 2008.

Once they’re registered, Twitter users do not have to visit the site ever again to post or view entries on the site. That’s led some analysts to speculate that Twitter’s audience on smart phones and other platforms may be much larger than web statistics can record.
