SF Renters Demand Bailout

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Renters rallied outside San Francisco City Hall Monday to urge the Board of Supervisors to give them some relief.

Supervisor Chris Daly has introduced a package to help renters during these tough economic times much in the way the federal government has bailed out homeowners. It was heard Monday by the Supervisors' Land Use Committee.

ListenKCBS’ Doug Sovern Reports

"The main piece of the package will limit rent increases so any tenant who is paying more than 33% of their income to rent will not get any more rent increases until their economic situation improves," explained Ted Gullickson of the San Francisco Tenants Union, who led a rally on the steps of City Hall in support of the measure.

Another piece of the legislation allows tenants to add roommates up to what is allowed by the housing code.

If the measure passes out of committee, it will go to the full board later this month. No word yet on whether it has Mayor Newsom's support.
