UNION CITY, Calif. (KCBS) -- Union City police are still searching for the mother of a baby whose body was discovered in a dumpster earlier this week.
The infant, referred to only as Baby Jane Doe, was found Monday with her umbilical cord still attached in a trash bin outside the Parkside Apartment complex on Decoto Road.
KCBS' George Harris reports
Police have since canvassed the area several times, including nearby James Logan High School, looking for clues to the mother’s identity.
The coroner has yet to release results of the autopsy that would indicate how the child died.
“There needs to be some lab work done,” said Union City police Lt. Kelly Musgrove. “We know that it’s a priority for them.”
California’s Safely Surrendered Baby Law gives mothers 72 hours to turn an unwanted newborn over to authorities at police stations, fire stations, hospitals and other designated sites.
Assemblyman Alberto Torrico, the majority leader who also represents that district, has sponsored legislation to extend that window to a full month.
