Twin Toddlers in Critical Condition After Horrific Crash

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) - Three-year-old twin boys remained in critical condition Monday afternoon following a crash on Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland earlier in the day that killed their mother and uncle, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The solo-vehicle crash was reported at about 1:30 a.m. on Highway 880 at Hegenberger Road, according to CHP Officer Sam Morgan.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene, where a 1990 Honda Accord believed to have been traveling at a high rate of speed had slammed into a concrete wall, Morgan said.

The boys' mother, 23-year-old Sara Marie Terra of Richmond, and her 20-year-old brother David James Terra of Modesto, were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to Morgan.

Neither boy had been restrained and no car seats were found at the scene.

One of the twins had been ejected from the car and the other was found pinned underneath the steering column, Morgan said.

Both suffered major injuries and were transported to Children's Hospital Oakland, according to Morgan.

The 26-year-old driver, who is also the domestic partner of the boys' mother, was also injured and taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, Morgan said.

That individual was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, and could face additional charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving with a suspended license.
