Alameda Schools Debate Controversial Lessons

ALAMEDA, Calif. (KCBS) - The Alameda Unified School District is wrestling with a controversy over gay civil rights.

District leaders could decide Tuesday night whether to adopt a series of lesson plans meant to reduce bullying, connected to gay and lesbian stereotypes.

The lessons would begin in kindergarten and continue through the fifth grade. They cover teasing, stereotypes and even include a story about two same-sex penguins.

Listen   KCBS' Chris Filippi reports

The proposed curriculum has created an emotional firestorm among parents. Hundreds packed a public meeting last week.

Opinions were sharply split between critics who say the lessons are not age appropriate and supporters who say the public acceptance of gay and lesbian families is long overdue.

An Alameda Unified spokesperson says the proposals are an attempt to comply with state anti-discrimination laws.
