California's Bumper Strawberry Crop

BERKELEY, Calif. (KCBS)  -- The plump strawberries Efren Abalos sells at his stand in the Berkeley Farmer’s Market are tasty proof that this year’s strawberry crop is shaping up for a record year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture projects a four percent increase in strawberry production in 2009 if the weather cooperates.

But the plentiful supply being enjoyed by him and another nearby seller, Jeremy Green, might not translate into a bumper year at the cash register.

They and other vendors at the popular market on Derby Street at Martin Luther King Jr. Way are worried the slow economy might still hurt sales.
