Berkeley Critical Mass Ride Turns Ugly

Bikes Crushed by MinivanBERKELEY, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Cyclists and a driver clashed during Friday’s Critical Mass bike ride in Berkeley, just two months after San Francisco’s Critical Mass event turned rowdy.

About 100 cyclists were riding in the north part of the city when the driver of a van hit three riders and crushed their bikes, according to bike activist Jason Meggs, who caught the confrontation on videotape.

"The motorist moved forward more, he trapped another bicycle and that bicyclist just barely got out of the way, and then he moved forward more and trapped another bicycle before you knew it, he had three bicycles stacked up under his right wheel," said Meggs.

Independent witnesses told police a different story. "The crowd surrounded the minivan and began shaking the van back and forth. The wife and the husband, as they shared with us, were quite terrified,” said Berkeley Police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss.

Cyclists had only minor injuries. No arrests were made.
