MY LIFE IN RUINS

  (PG-13)

Nia Vardalos had a huge hit with the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding.  That comedy is so good that it still plays smart and funny.  My Life in Ruins once again stars the likeable Vardalos, this time as a Greek-American tour guide living in Athens.  She loves Greek history, but finds herself dumbing it down for the tourists more interested in beaches than antiquities and ruins.  We meet every kind of national stereotype here..from the polite Canadians to the loud Americans to the Brits on a bender.  There's also a contrived romance with her bus driver (Alexis Georgoulis)..who turns out to be one sexy Greek.   All of this sounds not worth your time and money..but here's the surprise:  this is a fun, light, good time at the movies.  The Greek scenery is spectacular, the characters well cast (Richard Dreyfuss, Rachel Dratch among them) and the tale of a woman going from cold to hot..passive to passionate..is made easy to relate to by the smooth Vardalos.  Wish she had written this one (she was nominated for her screenplay My Big Fat Greek Wedding), but at least she brings some warmth and humor to the fluid filmmaking, directed by Donald Petrie. Take this comfortable, warm trip to Greece for a bit of escapist fun at the movies..sometimes that's just the ticket for our challenging times.
