Bridge Tolls Could Rise

Oakland, Calif. (KCBS)  -- State-owned bridges around the Bay Area may cost a dollar more to cross if a plan goes through by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

MTC officials are warning commuters to prepare themselves for tolls to rise from four dollars to five early next year.

MTC spokesman Randy Rentschler says the Antioch and Dumbarton Bridges must undergo seismic retrofit work at a cost of one billion dollars. The MTC doesn’t have that money he says.

"In addition to that, as everyone knows the economy is really down and our toll traffic is way down as well," Rentschler said. "Wall Street melted down, of course, and that's going to make it harder for us to borrow the money that we need to make these improvements."

The MTC is expected to hold public hearings this fall. The toll on the Golden Gate Bridge would be unaffected because the famed span is not state-owned. The transportation agency is also suggesting a carpool lane charge for crossing a state-owned bridge.
