EAST PALO ALTO, Calif. (KCBS) -- A charity event at a Palo Alto sports bar helped raise money for a regulation field in memory of a slain East Palo Alto police officer.
Officer Richard May was gunned down in January of 2006. Friends and supporters are raising money to create a rugby and soccer field in his honor. May's stepfather, Frank Merrill says May thought East Palo Alto lacked athletic facilities.
"Palo Alto and Menlo Park and Atherton have beautiful facilities and the kids in East Palo Alto have bare dirt," Merrill said. "We want to put a place on the map that everyone is going to be proud of."

May loved to play sports with children, Merrill said.
"He was all about kids," Merrill said. "He spent hours and hours on kids, coaching them in soccer softball, baseball."
The selected site is a field in a vacant lot behind St. Francis of Assisi Church in East Palo Alto. Organizers hope that the field will be ready by April of next year.
