AWAY WE GO
|
(R)
Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida are local, married..and have written this screenplay about two people in love (Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski) looking for a place to settle down and begin their family. In order for this movie to work, we have to connect and invest in their often bizarre and amusing journey. Easy to do since Rudolph and Krasinski give us characters rooted in reality but educated, witty and eccentric. How refreshing to have a leading lady who isn't marginilized or boring. This couple gives us their unique and loving bond as they meet up with self centered parents (Catherine O'Hara, Jeff Daniels) and weird friends (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Allison Janney).
What really sets this movie apart is that director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road) lets the dialogue live and breathe..not fast cutting or special effects..just interesting people trying to figure out their lives. Tired of noise, chases, violence and teen boy fantasies? This is a thoughtful, entertaining movie that relies on character and dialogue.
