Police in the East Bay will be stepping up patrols and on the lookout for DUI’s Friday night in anticipation of graduation night.
While cracking down on underage drinking is nothing new, this year’s effort takes on greater significance. Last month, 16-year-old Joseph Loudon, a student a Miramonte High School, died while at a house party. Toxicology results have not yet determined if alcohol played a role in the popular student’s death, but Orinda Police Chief Bill French says area police departments aren’t taking any chances of another tragedy. Three extra officers will be on patrol in Lafayette and Moraga, and three additional officers will also be on duty in the area.
“We have the three high schools, Campolindo, Acalanes and Miramonte, and that’s going to be the target of our efforts.”

Chief French says the message to this year's graduates is simple and direct:
“Be safe, enjoy it, but alcohol does not have to be part of the celebration.”
Chief French also advises students to call their parents and say, “please come get me, there's alcohol at the party,” to avoid any trouble at all.
