ISLETON, Calif. (KCBS) -- An annual festival on the Delta that draws thousands of people during the Father’s Day weekend is on hiatus. But, even though the Crawdad Festival has been cancelled, some of the locals really don’t mind.
KCBS’ Dave Padilla Reports
In the tiny community of Isleton the Crawdad Festival used to be a money-maker, but it has since become a money-taker.
”I saw the violence, I saw the garbage in the street, knifings, shootings. I don’t miss this at all,” said one resident who wished to remain anonymous.
The festival got its start in 1986 and was a celebration of crawfish and Cajun music.
Biker Tammy Newell says she’s been to every festival, and she believes the event simply got too big for the town.
”It’s a sad thing because it was really a great festival,” said Newell. “At the time when they started it you didn’t have to pay to park, and you could drink anywhere in the town.”
This weekend the Delta community will hold a so-called “Mudbug Massacre,” something a town leader calls a “non-event event” that is meant to draw people on a much smaller scale. Mudbug is another name for crawdad.
