THE PROPOSAL
|
(PG-13)
When asking an audience to invest time and money into a romantic comedy, it helps when both the man and woman are likeable or at least fun to watch. Since many mainstream movies are now philosophically "girls are dumb, boys are cool"..it makes sense that Ryan Reynolds is the only one to watch in this trite, repetitive movie. Reynolds has a warm, reactive comedy style, bringing to mind an everyman type like the late, far greater Jack Lemmon. Reynolds is the hot flavor of the month right now..and has a huge Hollywood future. Sandra Bullock plays this with sheer vanity and smug non-acting. Since she was one of the producers in this, it is a strange and disappointing performance. A comedy can be unbelievable, silly or dark..but hopefully not totally predictible and cliched. That would be this green-card, fish out of water (New England filling in for Alaska) boss-from-hell movie, director Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses) reminding us that a woman at the helm these days does not keep a movie from being big, dumb and contrived. One hat for a night of desperate DVD viewing..and that hat belongs to Ryan Reynolds. Thanks, mainstream, Hollywood..for another nail in the coffin of fun, interesting women onscreen. No wonder the term "chick flick" is such an insult.

ON THE BIG SCREEN: AWAY WE GO, ANGELS AND DEMONS, UP, EVERY LITTLE STEP, EASY VIRTUE (Jessica Biel, Colin Firth, Kristin Scott Thomas do Noel Coward!)
