SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KCBS) -- Former Silicon Valley congressman Tom Campbell brought his gubernatorial candidacy to the South Bay Friday, focusing on the state budget crisis and education.
Addressing the Silicon Valley Leadership Group at McAfee in Santa Clara, Campbell, now a professor at Chapman University’s School of Law in Orange County, says it’s important not to sacrifice California’s quality of education in this short-term crisis.

“To make up that difference I was prepared to support a gasoline tax rather than fire more teachers, close community colleges or take away scholarships for low-income students,” said Campbell.
Campbell is calling for a temporary 32 cent gas tax increase. He’s also proposing state workers give back 15 percent of wage increases they’ve received in the last few years or face furloughs.
Other potential GOP contenders Campbell will face include State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and former Ebay CEO Meg Whitman.
