SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Hundreds gathered for song prayer and speech at the Academy of Art auditorium for a vigil in honor of the two Current TV journalists arrested as they worked on a documentary near the North Korean border.
Laura Ling and Euna Lee have been sentenced to 12 years hard labor. The vigil marked the eve of the 100th day since they were jailed.
KCBS' Margie Shafer reports
Their families fear the two women may soon become political pawns as rhetoric heats up over North Korea's nuclear programs.
Lee's husband, Michael Suldate, said he last spoke with his wife this past Sunday. During that call, she recorded a message to play for their young daughter whenever the girl asks for her mother.
Ling's husband, Ian Clayton, will celebrate the couple’s fifth wedding anniversary alone this Friday. He told the gathered he was humbled and grateful for the support.
City College of San Francisco trustee Lawrence Wong and others who spoke at the vigil chose their words carefully, as diplomatic efforts to release the pair continue.
