ALAMEDA CO, Calif. (KCBS) -- Alameda County has adopted a final budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year, closing the largest funding gap the county has ever faced.
KCBS’ Margie Shafer Reports
The $178 million budget gap caused the board to face several gut-wrenching decisions on what areas to cut from.
Alameda County Administrator Susan Muranishi said more cuts are likely with the state's fiscal problems.
"Cut services in our safety net, health care, social services. Take another $40 million potentially of property taxes. Take another $35 million of our gas tax money that supports our road maintenance division. Takes away redevelopment money. So there have been reductions across the board.", Muranishi said.
The cuts to services and programs will mean layoffs in the sheriff, district attorney, public defender and probation offices. Some proposals that are now under state consideration could shift considerable costs to the county.
