CHERI

(R)

Cheri is not Michelle Pfeiffer's character, though this film belongs to her..and the clothes, sets and beauty of France's opulant Belle Epoque.  Set in 1908 within the wealthy world of elaborate meals, outrageously designed clothing and hats, Art Nouveau architecture, the movie takes us into a glamourous time and place.  Based on novels by Colette, Pfeiffer plays an aging courtesan embarking on a love affair with her rival's son (Rupert Friend.)  Kathy Bates is the rival, and whenever she or Pfeiffer is onscreen, the film holds our interest.  Unfortunately, director Stephen Frears and screenwriter Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons) does not make the story about these two remarkable women, who ended up wealthy and healthy in a field that must have been challenging and dangerous.  This is Cheri's story, and he is one bland character.  The idea is that this is a souless, empty young man, but Friend is boring to watch and takes the movie down with him whenever we are supposed to engage in his journey.  Three hats for the luminous Pfeiffer and Consolata Boyle's gorgeous costumes and designs.  It's an escape into another time and place..these days escapes look pretty good.
