SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KCBS) - Anyone with business to conduct at Santa Cruz City Hall needs to plan ahead, because its offices will be closed on Fridays.

Instead of working 5 8-hour days, city employees will work 4 9-hour shifts starting this week. City Manager Richard Wilson explained that the City of Santa Cruz is facing a $9 million deficit. "We've had multiple millions in outright cuts and layoffs and we realized there was just no way for us to get through that kind of a total unless we had compensation and reductions across the board. So, we've been talking to all of the City's bargaining units and obtained consent pretty much across the board."
According to Wilson, the change is definitely a work in progress. "We're thinking that it won't be a wrenching change for the public as much as it will be for many of employees. Still, we don't know that for sure so we'll see how it goes."
The shift reductions will save the City about $4 million.
