SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) - San Jose is the nation's 10ths largest city, with a population that eclipses those of both San Francisco and Oakland.
However, some argue that the composition of a powerful, regional transportation board isn't taking those numbers into account.
KCBS' Holly Quan reports
Almost 40 years ago, when the Metropolitan Transportation Commission was created, San Jose had a much smaller population than San Francisco. However, Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese pointed out that's changed dramatically. "Nowadays, we should call this the San Jose Bay Area Region instead of the San Francisco Bay Area Region because this county and the City of San Jose are so much bigger than San Francisco."
According to Cortese, San Jose is the largest city in the region and the largest producer of jobs. However, Santa Clara County still only have two guaranteed seats on the powerful MTC, the same number as San Francisco, which has half the population. "It's a commission that doles out all of the state and federal money to the local counties," pointed out Cortese.
An editorial in a local newspaper recommended that the MTC add a seat for San Jose, as well as a seat for Oakland, which the paper said is also underrepresented.
