Prices Go Up on Muni, BART, Other Transit

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS/AP) _ The cost to take public transportation around the San Francisco Bay area has just gone up.
Listen  KCBS’ Bob Melrose Reports

Bay Area Rapid Transit, AC Transit, the Municipal Railway in San Francisco and the Golden Gate ferry and bus system have all increased their fares, starting Wednesday.

For example, basic adult fares for AC Transit and Muni are going up to $2, while BART is increasing its surcharge for service to and from San Francisco International Airport to $4, up from $1.50.

Transit officials have blamed falling tax revenue and state budget cuts for the fare hikes. They're also considering reducing some services and laying off workers to save money.

Meanwhile, contract negotiations for BART continue this week, as officials work to avert a union strike that could begin as early as July 9.
