RICHMOND, Calif. (KCBS) -- A judge has ordered Chevron Corporation to halt expansion of its Richmond oil refinery.
Contra Costa County Superior Court Judge Barbara Zuniga said the company must clarify whether the expanded facility will process heavy crude oil, which generates more pollution than lighter crude.
Following Wednesday's ruling, the Richmond refinery let go of a hundred workers.
Chevron is expected to release about a thousand workers over the next 60 days as it demobilizes construction activities at the plant.
Chevron spokeperson Brent Tippen said the ruling would result in an estimated loss of one million labor hours and $50 to $75 million in income to the Richmond and county workforce over the next year.
