Local Fairs Benefit from Economic Downturn

PLEASANTON, Calif. (KCBS) - Turnout for the Alameda County Fair is off to a good start this holiday weekend. And, officials expect that, because of the weak economy, even more people will seek entertainment closer to home.

Fair promoters point out that there is something for everyone - animals, live music and carnival rides. "We had great opening numbers on our first day," said fair spokeswoman April Mitchell. "Compared to last year's opening day, we were up 7%."

According to Mitchell, "staycations" are more in vogue with families feeling the economic pinch. "We really think that people are going to stay home and go to their local events and maybe not travel out of state this year," she said.

The fair is offering some promotions as well, including a "military appreciation" discount this weekend, allowing anything with a valid military identification to get into the fair, along with one guest, for free. "$2 Tuesdays, it's $2 all day long to get in to the fair, for admission," Mitchell described another promotion. "Also, we have kids free Fridays, kids 12 and under get in for free, and senior free Wednesdays."

The Balloon Samba, a teacup-style ride from Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch, is proving to be a big draw, as is the ever popular deep fried fair food. "It was good," said one attendee who rode the Balloon Samba. "It was amazingly fun. It was spinning, a lot."
