Tragedies Serve As Lessons In Safety

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS)  -- A number of recent drownings have prompted Bay Area officials to remind parents about the importance of pool safety this Independence Day weekend.

ListenKCBS’ Mike Colgan Reports

"Explain to the children the importance of safety around the pool and that the children are letting the parents know if they're going out in the back yard to go swimming," said Jeremy Shoffner, the head of San Jose's aquatics program. Shoffner also emphasized the importance of teaching children how to swim.

Drowning is second only to car accidents as the leading cause of death for children in the United States.
