OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums this week called on the federal government for financial assistance to help the Port of Oakland lower emissions from diesel trucks at its terminals.
The Port of Oakland is aggressively implementing a program to reduce the effects of air pollution from its operations on surrounding neighborhoods.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood praised California's congressional delegation for backing $48 billion in economic stimulus funds during a visit to the West Coast's third-busiest port this week. But Mayor Dellums worries that the program's cost could put the port behind a competitive eight ball.
"If each port is busy trying to address the health and environmental needs of its community, no port should be economically disadvantaged because it stepped up to those issues," said Dellums.
