SF Public Defender Unhappy With Budget

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi said Friday that his office drew the short straw when it comes to the $6.6 billion city budget.

Adachi had convinced the finance committee to give him back $600,000 of the $1.9 million cut from his budget but he said all that changed during closed door negotiations this week. He's short again by $1.6 million and will have to lay off 10 public defenders.

Adachi said the public defender won't be able to represent all the indigent defendants and they'll be sent to private attorneys with the city picking up the tab - ultimately at a greater cost to taxpayers. It's the one loose end of an otherwise neatly wrapped city budget and the issue must be settled before the budget is voted on on July 14.
