SAUSALITO, Calif. (KCBS) -- This year 144 million people planned to host or attend a cookout, BBQ or picnic to celebrate the fourth. That's five million more than in 2008.
According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, more Americans were planning celebrations this year, and all those hot dogs and burgers are good news for retailers.
KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports
A possible reason for the jump is that the 4th fell on a Saturday this year, so people may have been planning to spend the whole weekend together.
For whatever reason, a bounce in sales is music to retailers' ears. They have suffered more than a year's worth of disappointing holidays during the current recession.
