BERKELEY, Calif. (KCBS) -- The thirst for knowledge knows no age limit, and that's evident in the popularity of a learning program targeting adults over 50.
UC Berkeley Extension San Francisco's Center for Learning Retirement or CLIR has been popular for years, but a recent increase in interest prompted CLIR to open its fall enrollment early this year:
We actually agreed to offer to people who join between July the 1st and August the 31st the opportunity to begin using their membership immediately," said CLIR marketing director Pat Tibbs. "They don't have to wait till September 1st."

CLIR membership is open to anyone over 50, and members get a 20 percent discount on Cal Extension courses, as well as unlimited free courses taught by other CLIR members, many of whom are professors or professionals specializing in certain fields.
Tibbs sees at least one reason for increased interest in CLIR.
"People are retiring earlier than they used to and they're looking for things to keep them busy," Tibbs said. "They want to continue learning. Lifelong learning is very popular these days."
CLIR was created 36 years ago, and Tibbs says it was the first program of its kind in the west.
