SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi insists there will be a public option in any health care reform that comes from Congress.
Pelosi, D-CA, left little doubt where she stands, during a recent appearance in San Francisco.
It was a very confident Pelosi who offered her opinion about national health care during a visit to a Mission District health clinic. "If we're going to have real health care reform, we must have a public option," she declared.
The option would be of belonging to a government-sponsored health plan, as well as being able to obtain insurance through a private company.

Many Republicans have been equally adamant that a public option would undermine private insurers and socialize medicine. Pelosi maintains that her goal is the same as President Obama's - to make certain that all Americans have care, and to keep the private sector honest. "It will be a level playing field so it will be competition with the private sector but it is not designed to eliminate the private sector," she explained.
Pelosi says a health care reform bill with a public option could be approved by the House by the end of the month.
