SAN JOSE (KCBS) -- Funding has been put on hold for most state projects because of the budget impasse, with one big exception--the long-planned, $6.1 billion BART extension to San Jose.
The California Transportation Commission approved the first of six $40 million allocations to extend the Fremont line into Santa Clara County.
KCBS' Mike Colgan reports
“Any kind of reimbursement at this time is actually necessary for us to be able to continue to move this project forward on an appropriate time line,” said Dolly Sandoval, chair of the Valley Transportation Authority board.
Full funding of the project depends on Washington. Various sales tax measures and commitments from the state will cover nearly 80 percent of the construction and maintenance costs.
“The final leg is 20 percent of the capital construction costs, about $750 million and that’s what we’re expecting from the federal government,” said Carl Guardino, a member of the California Transportation Commission.
