SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- More and more Bay Area bicyclists are riding without bike helmets, some because they think it's actually safer. The bike helmets are coming off for many Bay Area bicyclists, and not just because of the warmer weather. There's a movement on the streets to ride without a helmet for safety reasons.

"I personally never wear a helmet," said bike messenger Kinto Fannin. "I think I've got pretty good road skills and people feel like they need to preach to me about helmets, which is pretty annoying."
Some anti-helmet advocates think drivers are more likely to steer clear of bikers who they see are not wearing headgear.
"People fall down in the shower a lot and they don't make people wear helmets in the shower," said Fannin.
But many bike messengers, including Sean Hanlon say that's ridiculous, adding that he always wears his helmet.
"It's a quick quarter second to the pavement, that's about how fast your head travels from your bike," said Hanlon. "And you're top heavy on a bike, and when something goes wrong you’re going down really fast. Quicker than you think you are."
