For Immediate Release June 8, 2009
San Jose-San Francisco - KCBS All News Radio 740 AM and 106.9 FM (http://www.kcbs.com streaming live) celebrates 100 years of news, information, and innovation as the world’s first broadcasting station on June 11th 2009 where it all began on the corner of First and San Fernando in San Jose, California in the Fairmont Plaza.
It started in 1909: radio/broadcasting/mass communications and the station we now know as KCBS began with the spark of innovation on the corner of First and San Fernando in San Jose. Charles David Herrold aka “Doc” Herrold is credited with inventing radio broadcasting. “Doc” Herrold operated Herrold’s College of Wireless and Engineering at First and San Fernando in San Jose and in 1909 began his first broadcast transmission.
Initially the station was only identified as “San Jose Calling” and then KQW and then and now KCBS.
On Thursday June 11th KCBS returns to San Jose as Stan Bunger, morning anchor, and Rebecca Corral, mid-day anchor, anchor the news at noon from the very spot where the information age was born and Melissa Culross, mid-day anchor, anchors from San Francisco.
San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed will be on hand to commemorate the KCBS centennial.
Prize give-aways include 100 tickets to see the Doc Herrold/KCBS exhibit at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose; 100 commemorative KCBS centennial t-shirts and 100 free pizzas from Amici's East Coast Pizzeria.

Commemorative plaque dedicated by History San Jose, KCBS All News 740AM/016.9FM and KCBS.com
