Contra Costa Develops Bird Flu Kit

(KCBS) -- Concern about a possible pandemic bird flu outbreak has prompted Contra Costa health officials to develop a comprehensive informational kit that's already being used in other parts of the United States.

Bird flu has killed at least 130 people worldwide since it surfaced in Asia in 2003. It has yet to become a pandemic.

But Kim Cox, a Contra Costa health emergency response coordinator, said the county doesn't want to be caught without a plan should the worst materialize.

As a result, the county developed a flu preparedness kit.

"They're designed to help school personnel have information should we have a pandemic situation here in the U.S, and more specifically in Contra Costa County," she said.

Cox told KCBS' Dave Padilla the kits are comprehensive.

"They have preparedness information, fact sheets on symptoms, prevention and health care tips and guidelines should schools need to be closed."

The World Health Organization reports the deadly bird flu virus has mutated in an Indonesian family, killing seven of eight members last month.

But WHO investigators said this does not increase the likelihood of a pandemic.
