Three weeks before the primary Lt. Governor John Garamendi is asserting himself in the polls, and he tried to assert his independence on healthcare before a standing room-only crowd at St. Mary’s College.

”President Obama apparently has cut a deal with the drug companies that there will be no federal opportunity to negotiate drug prices for Medicare. I think this is dead wrong,” said Garamendi.

Democratic State Senator Mark DeSaulnier talked up his deep roots in the district, while newcomer Anthony Woods, a gay, black, 29-year-old Iraq war veteran took aim at the more seasoned politicians in the field.

”It’s time to start sending a different generation of leaders to start solving those problems,” said Woods. “Time and time again we keep sending career politicians to these seats, and then we’re disappointed when we realize that nothing changes.”

Five Democrats, six Republicans and three other candidates are competing to succeed Tauscher. Each party’s top vote getter on September first advances to the November election.
