Walnut Creek Rushes to Pass Pot Club Moratorium

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KCBS)  -- The Walnut Creek City Council scheduled an emergency meeting Tuesday morning to pass a moratorium on pot clubs, stemming from the city's first permit request to open a medical marijuana dispensary.

The request has taken Walnut Creek by surprise. It's an application to open a pot club at 1291 Oakland Blvd, right under the 24/680 interchange with easy access to BART.

The problem is that right now the city doesn't have any laws or regulations covering pot clubs the way they do for nightclubs and bars, so this emergency session is designed to pass a 45 day moratorium, renewable for up to two years, so staffers can hash out the rules.

Walnut Creek Mayor Gary Skrel says this isn't a debate about the legality of medical marijuana.

"I'm not sure we're going to get into all that," said Skrel. "That's what we'd like staff to look at. What is the appropriate location for this type of establishment? Is it anywhere in the city? Or is it more appropriate for medical areas?"

One medical area could be where Kaiser Hospital sits now on South Main Street, except that it's right across from a high school.

According to one website, a group called C3 Collective is announcing a grand opening in Walnut Creek at the Oakland Blvd. address for a boutique medical marijuana dispensary that would also offer yoga, pilates and acupuncture.
