UC Berkeley Students Affected by Cuts

BERKELEY, Calif (KCBS)  -- Students at their first day of classes at UC Berkeley are finding that it's hard to get into many classes with cuts affecting the campus. Students at their first day of classes at UC Berkeley are finding that it's hard to get into many classes with cuts affecting the campus.

UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau says student fees and tuition have been hiked.

ListenKCBS' Janice Wright reports

"Our budget shortfall is about $100 million and that corresponds in terms of state funding of students to about 9,000 students."

Further cost cutting measures include about 200 layoffs and furloughs.

Birgeneau says Cal Grants being saved is good news for low-income students, but he says he is worried about middle class students getting squeezed out.
