SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (KCBS) -- An apartment building was evacuated and a major downtown San Rafael thoroughfare closed on Thursday as PG&E crews worked to seal a gas leak.
A leak in the West End neighborhood near Fourth Street and H Street was first reported on Wednesday night around 8:30 p.m. Pacific Gas and Electric workers registered a high concentration of gas, but could not pinpoint the source of the leak.
A building in the 1800 block of Fourth Street was evacuated around 4:15 a.m. when a six-inch steel gas pipe and a four-inch plastic pipe ruptured, according to a spokesman for the utility.
Forty people were displaced by the leak.
PG&E expects to have both pipes capped by noon on Thursday.
