SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- San Francisco will bar most private vehicles from portions of Market Street under a pilot program set to begin at the end of the month.
An experiment in easing congestion that starting September 29, will encourage cars traveling east on Market Street to turn right on 10th Street. By Eighth Street, all vehicles except Muni, taxis and delivery trucks will be required to turn right.
Traffic entering Market at 7th Street will be able to travel only one block to Sixth Street before being forced to turn right. Crosstown traffic going north and south across Market will not be affected.
Westbound traffic will not be changed either.
The new rules, part of an effort to make the city’s main boulevard more pedestrian and bicycle friendly, will be tested for six weeks before any permanent changes are made.
