SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS) - Bay Area transportation officials are learning from their European counterparts how to make it easier for people to get around on two wheels.
The European bicycling delegation wraps up a three-day teaching tour today in San Francisco.
The Europeans are importing lessons learned about improving the health of cities by moving more people from cars to bicycles. "It'll be a little bit of a gut check for us on where we're at," explained Doug Johnson with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, playing host to the visitors. "And I think really looking at what kind of lessons and opportunities are there for us to take away from their experiences and make the most of our opportunities here to really develop a robust cycling network."
KCBS' Doug Sovern reports
Dutch cycling ambassador Hans Voerknecht said one thing the Bay Area should consider is moving the bike lanes so that they are between parked cars and the sidewalk, instead of right next to traffic. "When everything's equal and when it's safe enough, people like to cycle. If there is enough good, safe bicycle lane infrastructure, people just love to cycle."
When they finish with San Francisco, the delegation moves on to Portland.
