SO. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS)  -- A Louisiana school district is looking to California to hire its schoolteachers. A South San Francisco recruiting fair is underway this weekend at the Embassy Suites Hotel, for the East Baton Rouge Parish school system.

California is making cuts to education and struggling with high unemployment, but that’s not the case everywhere.

”Starting salary is approximately $43,000, plus benefits, so it’s a great salary. Housing is very economical and food is very economical as well,” said Dr. Elizabeth Durran-Swifford with the East Baton Rouge Parrish School District.

They are especially looking for math, science, special education, and gifted and talented teachers.

”We’re targeting specific areas, we’re not looking for English or social studies teachers,” said Durran-Swifford.

Principal of Westdale Middle School, Sherry Brock says the majority of students in this district live in poverty.

”We need a person that can really look down the road, not just at what’s happening today, but looking at what that child can be five or ten years from now, with just a little help from someone who cares,” said Brock.

It is unclear just how many Californians will make the move, but if you’re qualified, and are willing to commit to two-years, you can be hired on the spot, and in the classroom by Monday.
