BERKELEY, Calif. (KCBS) -- UC Berkeley freshman Tierra Rogers has been diagnosed with a rare heart condition that prevents her from playing for the Golden Bears.
The former All-American forward at San Francisco’s Sacred Heart Cathedral had been pursuing her basketball dream in honor of her slain father, shot to death during half-time outside one of her games last year.
His killer was never found.
KCBS' Holly Quan reports
Rogers was taken to Alta Bates after she collapsed during practice at Haas Pavilion last Monday. Last night doctors at UCSF implanted a defibrillator to manage the abnormalities.
The severity of her condition means it is unlikely she will be able to play competitively. “I am saddened that I was diagnosed with this disease, but I feel God has given me a second chance at life,” she said in a written statement.
She's expected to be out of the hospital in a few days.
In high school team, Rogers helped led Sacred Heart to three state championships including two perfect 32-0 seasons.
