SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- California submitted its application Friday for $4.7 billion in federal stimulus dollars to fund the state's high speed rail project.
While the request, if granted, would eat up more than half of the $8 billion the federal government has set aside for such projects, Bay Area transportation authorities are optimistic the application will be approved.
"This project is much farther along than virtually every other project in the country," said Dan Cortese, director of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
KCBS’ Mike Colgan Reports
California High Speed Rail Authority board member Ron Diridon called this a milestone day for the project.
"This station...will handle more riders per day and per year than the San Jose Airport will by 2020.
The San Francisco -- San Jose portion of the project, which will cost almost $1 billion, is expected to create more than 34,000 jobs.
Construction is scheduled to start no later than November 2012.
