OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Following months of outcry, the Oakland City council has rolled back parking enforcement from 8 p.m. to 6 p.m.
KCBS’ Margie Shafer Reports
The controversial parking policy adopted in July extended parking peter enforcement from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and angered business owners like Allen Michaan who owns the Grand Lake Theatre.
"I thought things were getting better, but then this came along, and you basically shattered my business, and that of others around town," said Michaan.
The council voted to roll back the hours, but higher meter rates and higher costs for parking tickets remain in effect. City Councilwoman Pat Kernighan voted in favor of the rollback.
"It's not acceptable," said Kernighan. "People don't want to feel like we're balancing the city budget on their backs, or that we're punishing people."
The two-hour parking extension was expected to bring in $900,000 in new revenue to the city.
