SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Six days before the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake, disaster officials are reminding the Bay Area to get prepared for the next emergency.
There's a statewide drill called the Great California Shakeout at 10:15 this Thursday morning. Matt Bettenhausen, Secretary of CAL EMA, the new state Emergency Management Agency, says we don't need to wait for the official drill to start getting ready.
"We want you to be prepared for all hazards," he said.
KCBS' Doug Sovern reports
Rob Dudgeon, deputy director of the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management, says earthquake preparation is a lot easier than you think:.
"It's not about having a bagful of stuff," he said. "It's about looking around and realizing what you have in your house."
San Francisco will host its own events, called The Big Rumble. The statewide drill Thursday morning will be the largest earthquake drill in history.
