San Francisco Opens First Library Branch Since 1960s

San Francisco, Calif. (KCBS)  -- At a time when most cities are closing their library branches, San Francisco is opening a new one, the first since the 1960s.

The new branch is in the city's growing Mission-Bay District, near the Giants' ballpark.

"34,000 volumes and we have a very large collection of DVDs, CDs, books in other languages.  We also have 18 public Interent stations. You name it and we pretty much have it," said Sarah Lester , branch manager.

It was not long ago that people were fearing the Internet would shut down libraries noted KCBS reporter Mark Seelig.

"Libraries are evolving. They are pretty much for information but it's also a gathering place," said San Francisco City Librarian Luis Herrera.

"It's great. It's beautiful. It's nice to see the city investing in things in this part of the city where things are growing," said one new patron to the library Saturday.

The library is located on the ground floor of a senior housing unit with retail shops and Muni access close.
