OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Oakland Police are confirming the details about the fatal hit-and-run collision Friday that killed an Oakland girl outside of her school, and they continue to search for the driver.
Acting chief Howard Jordan says 11-year-old Alana Williams wasn't struck just once, but repeatedly, as the driver backed up and went forward several times in a marked crosswalk outside of Frick Middle School on Foothill Blvd. Jordan says investigators are releasing little information on the car, other than to say it was small and black.
KCBS' Tim Ryan reports
"We're hoping that the person that is responsible for this finds it in their conscience to turn themselves in," he said.
Jordan says police have made efforts to stop unlicensed drivers and get them off the streets.
"Unlicensed drivers, we believe, are a root cause of a lot of these problems," he said.
The intersection of Foothill and 64th was busy at the time of Friday fatality and police urge anyone with information to call 510-777-3333.
