OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- The Oakland police sergeant who was in charge of the investigation into the murder of newspaper editor Chauncey Bailey has been cleared of any wrongdoing, and given the okay to go back on the street.
KCBS’ Bob Melrose Reports
An internal affairs investigation was underway over the way Sgt. Derwin Longmire handled the killing of the Oakland Post Editor. The department considered firing Longmire after the state attorney’ general’s office concluded he mishandled the probe into the August 2007 killing of Bailey.
However, the Chronicle reports that last week then-acting Chief Howard Jordan cleared Longmire to return to duty after being on paid administrative leave for six months. Jordan also cleared Longmire’s then-boss Lt. Ursey Joiner of any wrong-doing as well.
Longmire was criticized for not looking into the role of then-head of Your Black Muslim Bakery Yusef Bey IV had in the Bailey killing. Bey has since been charged with murder, and is awaiting trial.
