Officials: Concerns Over SF Hospital Project Unwarranted

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Cost overruns and reports of mismanagement have stopped a major expansion at City College of San Francisco just as San Francisco General Hospital begins construction of a new hospital funded by voter approved bonds.

The plan was to build a new performing arts building and stem cell center at City College, both from voter approved bonds.

But now, money has run out and the projects are at a standstill. Auditors said money was misspent and budget regulations were ignored.

Health Director Dr. Mitch Katz said steps have been taken to insure the same doesn't happen for the hospital project.

"It's all audited, it's quarterly reports that key up to exactly how the money was appropriated. It's all sort of transparent," Katz said.

It was a theme echoed by Mayor Gavin Newsom during his groundbreaking remarks.

"We said to the taxpayers, support us, but we'll also support you. We're going to do the right thing. We're going to make sure we spend your money wisely and this is what it will cost," said Newsom.

The hospital construction will take five years to complete.

San Francisco does have a history of bond measures that fell short of promises; not only the city college bonds, but also school bonds and a measure to rebuild the Laguna Honda Hospital.
