GILROY, Calif. (KCBS) -- Hundreds of people are being evacuated from the Santa Cruz Mountains north of Watsonville because of a wildfire that broke out overnight.
CalFire says the fire that started at about 3 a.m. Sunday has burned about 800 acres so far.
The blaze is burning near an area where a wildfire last year destroyed 29 homes and threatened the Mount Madonna retreat center.
Cal Fire spokeswoman Colleen Baxter says high winds prevented firefighting aircraft from dousing the flames with water when the blaze was first reported. She says battling the fire was much more difficult without them.
More than 200 firefighters are on the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
