SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney said both directions of the Bay Bridge will be closed for repairs as a cable from the repaired eyebar section of the span fell into traffic Tuesday evening.
Both the upper and lower deck of the bridge will be closed until further notice and Ney said he is not sure what time it will reopen.
"We have a design group out there right now and an engineer group, they're going to be taking a look at the issue and assessing what they can do," Ney said.
The accident occurred just east of the new S-curve said California Highway Patrol Officer Shawn Chase.
"Apparently the cantilever section where they had to do repairs in September during Labor Day, there's something wrong with that crack up there that the repairs they did came undone apparently," Chase said.
The problem caused westbound traffic to be at a standstill throughout the evening commute.
